If the recycling rate is not increased, the reduction of green-house gas emissions will be limited. In the material recycling process, the repeated melting and cooling pro-cesses may partially cause degener-ation and degradation, such as the shortening of the molecular chain. There are efforts to utilize material-re-cycled plastics by using them in the middle layer of a three-layer film. How-ever, if this is done, the cohesion in the film thickness direction becomes weak.Limiting the use of cut-off materials and polymerization residue within the company“We want to increase the recycling rate without compromising the quality of the film.” The company focused on a combination of material recycling and chemical recycling. In chemical recycling, plastics are depolymerized into monomers and/or oligomers using heat and catalysts then polymerized again to be used as raw materials. This process maintains the same quality as if recycled raw materials were not used, with little or no effect on strength and other prop-erties.In addition, the company has tight-ened quality control by limiting the use of chemically-recycled raw materials to only the company’s cut-off materi-als and residue generated during the polymerization process (which were disposed of in the past). As a result, the company could maintain the same physical properties of its EMBLEM CE and EMBLET CE as its convention-al products (Table 1). In Japan, they comply with Notification No.370 of the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare and the Positive List System for Food Utensils, Containers, and Packaging. In relation to other countries, comply with FDA and EU regulations, etc., so they can be used for food packaging.Furthermore, Mr. Nishina points out that the use of in-house waste allows the company to predict the status of raw materials and guarantee the pro-duction of a certain amount by a cer-tain date, thereby contributing to a sta-ble supply.Under the supervision of the Sus-Promotion tainable Management Organization, the greenhouse gas emissions of the EMBLEM CE and the EMBLET CE were compared with those of the case in which recycled raw materials were not included using LCA methods. It was found that the EM-BLEM CE and the EMBLET CE could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 38% and 27%, respectively.Physical properties and printability equivalent to conventional productsEMBLEM CE and EMBLET CE contain 40% chemical-material recycled plas-tic as raw material*. Ideally, we expect to be able to achieve a 100% recycled ratio. According to Akiko Kurosawa of the Film Sales Department, the current ratio was reached because chemical recycling requires additional process-es such as a decomposition process called depolymerization, and if the chemical recycling ratio were to be in-creased, other issues would arise such as hindering work efficiency. In addi-tion, the increased use of chemical-ly-recycled resin increases the price of the film, so it is challenging to increase the ratio excessively.Table 1 Comparison of physical properties of EMBLEM CE and EMBLET CE with conventional products35
