The changeover from film to paper requires only the replacement of size parts, which reduces the oper-ator’s workload. Mr. Takahashi says, “It is difficult to handle papers because of its non-elastic, but SVE’s stress-resis-tant mechanism allows converting pa-per without tearing or wrinkling. Since there are no restrictions on the type of base paper used, there is a wider range of options and you will plan a variety of package designs,” he says. Depending on the model, the ma-chine can produce packaging bags such as pillow, gusset, square bottom, corner seal, full corner seal, three-side seal (with zipper), and standing pouch (with zipper), and can handle four types of paper and seven types of film.Another distinctive point is that the ZAP module, a hot-melt coating unit jointly devel-oped with H.B. Fuller, a major U.S. adhesive provider, can be installed on the SVE series packaging machines. The ZAP module allows for a precise, thin coating of hotmelt only on the glue joint, eliminating the need for a sealant resin coating on the entire surface of the packaging material. The hot melt dries quickly so it does not be-come sticky when it comes in contact with the pass roller, and it can be reac-tivated and adhered by applying heat and pressure with the sealer. When paper is used, the sealant converting process can be eliminated, and almost 100% of the packaging can be made of paper material,” says Mr. Takahashi.Note that the company’s Com-petence Center Japan and Vision Technology in Saitama Prefecture is equipped with the SVE 3220 DZ bag making and filling machine, which is capable of converting pillow bags and square bottom bags using recyclable heat-seal paper, as a demonstration machine. Starting in February 2022, the company is hosting a “Cross Network-ing Event” where visitors can watch demonstrations of the demo machine, including the converting and setup of paper and mono-material packaging. The event provides an opportunity for specialists in various fields related to packaging, such as material manu-facturers, converters, brand owners, and trading companies, to gather and exchange information on sustainable packaging. As for mono-material plas-tics, in addition to pillow bags, visitors can observe the making and filling of standing pouches with zippers, which is usually difficult to do with vertical pil-low machines.Brand owners, EPA, and others accelerate effortsAlthough sustainable packaging initia-tives are a global trend, it is not some-thing that can be pursued by only one packaging machine manufacturer. In particular, for paper packaging, a va-riety of materials have been developed in the Japanese market, but there are still some concerns, such as difficulties in using existing machines, quality as-surance issues, and cost increases. However, a tipping point is ap-proaching. It will force us to acceler-ate our sustainability efforts despite these circumstances. For example, global brand owners are working to achieve their 2025 targets, the “Inter-SVE series compatible packaging formatsSVE ZAP Technical Specifications32
