TOTAI is a manufacturer of plastic packaging ma-At first, I even thought that packages were made by con-fectionery and food manufac-turers in their own companies. While working in various fields as a route sales representative, I absorbed knowledge of re-tort packaging materials, light packaging, and bag-making materials. The best part of sales is being able to see the customer’s reaction directly. I still remember the time a manufacturer of gift baked goods asked me if I could extend the expiration date.“It’s fine in winter, but in the hot and humid summer, it’s impossible to maintain quality,” he said. I immediately sug-gested our barrier coating “Q Coat Process”. It’s our sig-nature technology that improves water vapor and oxygen barrier properties in films by coating packaging films with saran (polyvinylidene chloride). It makes the contents less likely to spoil and extends the expiration date.Although there were no numerical problems, I watched on edge as the confectionery was actually packaged in the coated film and then subjected to a series of transportation tests and resistance tests. As a result, I was able to extend the expiration date by one week, which was appreciated. Our technical proposal was adopted and helped our cus-tomers. I remember how happy I was.Wide variety of food packaging produced by TOTAI43terials used in the packaging of confectionery and food products sold in supermarkets and conve-nience stores, daily necessities such as shampoo re-fills, chemical products, and industrial products. Since then, the company has continued its pro-gressive management. The company, which will soon celebrate its 100th anniversary, has a 32% female em-ployee ratio. The workplace environment for returning to work after maternity or childcare leave has been in place since early on, and career development for women after returning to work will be key in the future. As women are expected to be active in management positions, if they are not nurtured at the right time like men, the gender balance within the company may be shaken in the future, which could affect the man-agement itself. We interviewed two women from the Sales Division, who have pioneered the advancement of women in the company, about their own experiences and how women work.Deputy General Manager of Sales Division“Becoming a manager has broadened my hori-zons,” says Mrs. NakajoMrs. Tamaki NakajoTOTAIJoy of helping customersI entered the company in 1994, at the height of the employ-ment ice age. I aspired to work in sales, but most compa-nies had fewer openings for women, so finally, my university introduced me to TOTAI. I felt it must be fate. Become manager after returning from maternity leaveIt was about two years after returning to work after childbirth that I was approached for a management position. My child was still small and sick, and I got called from the nursery fre-quently, so I wondered if I could handle it. When a customer makes a complaint, we are busy examining and responding to it until late.
