(Right) Mrs. Nakajo chatting with her subordinatesproducts may be used as a reference. I design while under-standing the thoughts of the customer selling the product, such as what kind of people they want to sell and what they are particular about, and considering images, illustrations, and text that clearly show the features of the product while also being aware of the consumer’s perspective. There are three people in the Design Office, two in their 40s and one in her 30s. Since our work is artisanal, we have worked like a private store for many years, but recently we are changing our structure to work as a team as the “TOTAI Design Office”. Sharing ideas is more stimulating for design than doing it alone.Besides, the three of us are of different ages and have different lifestyles, so what we see and how we feel must be different. If I constantly come into contact with different values and grasp things, I will not become complacent and will develop new perspectives. Although I spend most of my time sitting in front of a computer, I try to see and absorb as many different things as possible daily, as the world’s trends are changing rapidly. When I entered the company, it was the beginning of a “new era” in which design was changed from being done by hand to using a Mac. I worked hard trying to figure out how to make things made on a Mac look natural.I think I was the first at the head office to take mater-nity and paternity leave. I had the life events of marriage and childbirth at an early stage of my career, so I was very scared of having a career break. Now it is normal to take a year or two off, but back then I was in such a hurry to get back to work as soon as possible that I returned to work after only six months. In the past, overtime work was common, so I had to ask someone else to do my job when I had to pick up my child from the nursery. I felt bad asking for more help when oth-ers were also working overtime on their jobs, and I wanted to be involved in the design I worked on until the very end, so I wondered if I could somehow make time to work on it myself. At the time, working women were in the minority and there were not many nurseries. At local government nurs-eries, the hours are not flexible, making it difficult to work overtime. I desperately searched for a private daycare mom who could watch my child at home.My husband is working alone at the Osaka branch. We met and married within the company. Although we were in different departments, we worked in the same office and knew each other’s work situation and relationships, so it was easy for us to understand each other. We often kept in touch during work and got through the child-rearing period while sharing the responsibility of taking our child to and from the nursery and making meals for them. Now that I am no longer busy with my child, I spend my days off growing onions, spinach, mizuna, and other veg-etables on a public farm that my husband rents near our home. At first, I wasn’t sure if I could do it, but I thought it would be a waste to give up the fields that my husband had spent so much time and effort cultivating. Watering is hard work, but the longer I have been growing them, the more I am enjoying.I have been with the company for 25 years. The hard times passed quickly, and the working environ-female ment for (From left) Mrs. Nakajo and Mrs. Sasaiemployees has changed dramatically. However, the feeling that I love pack-age design work hasn’t changed since I entered the compa-ny. I have never given up on what I find interesting and have been able to pursue it for a long time. I feel happy.Company trips and company sporting events that were popular before the coronavirus45
