Newly Designed LCD Backlight System Components Achieve Both High Luminance and Wide Viewing Angle

Tokyo, May 22, 2023, Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) has newly designed the system components used with Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) module backlights, such as those used in notebook computers, and announced that these components are now available to its clients. Compared with the design of currently available standard components, the newly designed system components are not only thin, but also achieve high luminance and wide viewing angles.

These components are mainly composed of a Light Guide Plate (LGP), a reflector, and a prism that refracts light. DNP has improved brightness by adjusting the prism arrangement (the convex portion of the triangle) so that it is turned against the standard and faces the light emitting surface of the LGP.

Also, in answer to the challenge of narrow viewing angles due to the positioning of the prism, we improved light utilization efficiency by devising an LGP and a reflector. We then achieved both high luminance and a wide viewing angle by optimizing the prism shape design. Offering these newly designed system components makes it possible to both cut parts numbers and reduce power consumption, as well as contribute to reducing the environmental burden via lower CO2 emissions. At the same time, we have also achieved a thinner product.

Features of Newly Designed System Components

1. Achieve high luminance and wide viewing angle, along with a thin backlight

DNP is capable of designing and supplying these newly designed system components in their totality, making it possible to optimize performance in line with client requirements.

It is also possible to achieve high luminance by increasing light utilization efficiency, and a wide viewing angle by optimizing the prism shape design. Furthermore, as it is also possible to reduce the number of parts compared to currently available standard systems, a thinner backlight unit can be achieved. The LGP can be made as thin as 0.4mm.

2. Low power consumption

Increasing light utilization efficiency, contributes to the reduction of backlight unit power consumption. This makes it possible to reduce the size of the batteries in notebook computers, leading to a reduction in the overall weight of the equipment.

3. Contributing to reduced CO2 emissions

In recent years, we have witnessed increased interest in corporate management that takes into consideration Environment, Society, Governance (ESG), and attention is focused on environmentally friendly products and services. The newly designed system components will reduce the number of components, achieve low power consumption, and contribute to reduced CO2 emissions.

Going Forward

DNP will provide the newly designed system components to panel manufacturers that manufacture various displays, including those for notebook computers. We aim to achieve sales, including those from related components, of approximately 2.0 billion yen by FY 2025.

DNP and the DNP Group company DNP America, LLC will participate in SID Display Week 2023, the world's largest display conference, to be held in Los Angeles, CA from May 23 to May 25, where they will exhibit the system component.
