Three representative case studies were analysed: flexible film packaging (rotogravure vs. flexographic), commercial illustration printing (rotogravure vs. offset), and decorative paper printing (rotogravure vs. digital inkjet).

Using a harmonised LCA framework and measuring Global Warming Potential over 100 years (GWP100), the study delivers fair and comparable results across technologies. The findings confirm that rotogravure printing performs on par with alternative processes in terms of carbon footprint when process standardisation, material efficiency, and optimised production conditions are applied.

A key outcome of the study is that sustainability in printing is not determined by the technology alone. Instead, factors such as substrate selection, ink systems, and process efficiency play a decisive role. The results underline the importance of standardised methodologies to enable transparent comparisons and measurable progress across the industry.

The project also highlights the value of close collaboration between academia and industry, bringing together scientific expertise and practical application knowledge to address sustainability challenges in a meaningful and data-driven way.

With this study, the GRA provides the industry with a robust and scientifically grounded reference for evaluating environmental performance and supports ongoing efforts towards more sustainable printing solutions.About GRA
The Global Rotogravure Association (GRA) brings together gravure printers, cylinder manufacturers, engravers, and supply industries from across the globe. Building on the legacy of the European Rotogravure Association (ERA), founded in 1956, GRA is committed to fostering international cooperation, technological progress, and industry excellence in rotogravure printing.

Life Cycle Assessment Study Confirms Sustainable Performance of Rotogravure Printing
Munich, April 2026 – The Global Rotogravure Association (GRA) announces the successful completion of its comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study evaluating the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of rotogravure printing in comparison with other major printing technologies.

[4,9,19
10
