The signing took place on 12 May 2026 in Kawasaki, Japan. A key requirement identified by the Consultative Committee for Time and Frequency (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bipm.org\/en\/committees\/cc\/cctf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CCTF<\/a><\/strong>) is the ability to compare independent realizations of the second at the level of 10\u207b\u00b9\u2078 and to achieve consistent contribution to Coordinated Universal Time (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bipm.org\/en\/time-metrology#:~:text=Coordinated%20Universal%20Time,CGPM%20in%202018.\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bipm.org\/en\/time-metrology#:~:text=Coordinated%20Universal%20Time,CGPM%20in%202018.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UTC<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transportable OFS are one approach under consideration for supporting such comparisons. Evaluating their feasibility and conducting technical studies related to operational and environmental requirements, is an important step in the broader roadmap towards the redefinition of the second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1681-7575\/ad17d2\/pdf\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1681-7575\/ad17d2\/pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read the Metrologia paper on the \u2018Roadmap towards the redefinition of the second\u2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The collaboration is expected to involve the National Metrology Institute of Japan (NMIJ), alongside the BIPM, RIKEN and Shimadzu Corporation, and to remain open, under equal conditions, to other national metrology institutes and partner organizations with a reasonable interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Background<br>Optical frequency standards, including optical lattice clocks and single-ion optical clocks, are based on optical transitions in atoms or ions and offer higher stability and accuracy than current microwave standards used to realize the second.
