TOPPAN Inc. at Automotive Interiors Expo 2024

Tokyo – November 5, 2024 – TOPPAN Inc., a TOPPAN Group company and wholly owned subsidiary of TOPPAN Holdings Inc. , will participate in Automotive Interiors Expo 2024, which will be held from November 12 through 14 at Messe Stuttgart in Germany.

For the first time outside Japan, TOPPAN will present a mock-up demonstrating the use of its transparent decorative film in a vehicle. The innovative film can conceal the presence of a screen while also enabling content to be displayed in the conventional way. TOPPAN will also showcase LC MAGIC™ Normal Black, a liquid-crystal-based light-blocking film from the TOPPAN Group that can switch between transparent and a black color. Coinciding with the expo, samples of the TOPPAN Group’s interior products for vehicles will also be made available for the European automotive market.

Background

Advances in driving automation technology are believed to be prompting a change in the function of vehicle interiors from a space where people drive to one in which they relax while on the move. There is also growing focus on how people spend their time inside vehicles. However, the inclusion of displays in vehicle interiors may not be conducive to creating relaxing spaces because, while they enable information and content to be viewed, they may not blend well with the interior and could contribute to an excess of information. To address this challenge, TOPPAN has employed its proprietary printing technologies to develop a transparent decorative film that adds real decoration to the surface of a display while also enabling it to be seen clearly.

Main Solution on show

・Transparent decorative film
This is a new interior material designed for next-generation mobility, such as self-driving cars and software defined vehicles (SDVs). The special transparent decorative film enables the seamless integration of an interior panel and a display to bring elegance and new value to vehicle interiors. At Automotive Interiors Expo, TOPPAN will showcase a mock-up of the transparent decorative film incorporated into a vehicle’s instrument panel.

・LC MAGIC™ Normal Black—liquid crystal light control film
LC MAGIC™ is a thin light control film developed by applying liquid crystal technologies accrued in TOPPAN’s display business. It is a groundbreaking product that turns from transparent to opaque at the flick of a switch and can be used for a wide range of purposes, including as a signage screen or alternative to blinds and curtains. Two types of film are available. The normal mode version is transparent when power is on, while the reverse mode is transparent when power is off.
